Summary of Revisions for the 2002 Clinical Practice Recommendations

Additions to the Clinical Practice Recommendations

  • "Treatment of Hypertension in Adult Patients With Diabetes Mellitus"
  • "Evidence-Based Nutrition Principles and Recommendations for the Treatment and Prevention of Diabetes and Complications" position statement replaces the former position statement "Nutrition Recommendations and Principles for People with Diabetes Mellitus," "Food Labeling," and "Role of Fat Replacers in Diabetes Medical Nutrition Therapy"
  • "Standards of Medical Care for Patients With Diabetes" was completely rewritten to incorporate ADA’s evidence-based grading system

Summary of Revisions to Other Position Statements

The following position statements had substantial revisions that have been outlined below:

"Hyperglycemic Crises"

  • Clarified the protocols for insulin therapy of DKA and HHS
  • Revised the language around the use of supplemental insulin in the treatment of DKA

"Insulin Administration"

  • Updated section on types of insulin
  • Clarified language around the issue of needle reuse
  • Included information on using insulin pens

"Diabetic Nephropathy"

  • Added evidence-based grading system
  • Modified recommendations for use of antihypertensive agents

"Tests of Glycemia"

  • Included information on the use of blood-ketone testing

"Care of Children with Diabetes in the School and Day Care Setting"

  • Included information on the use of blood-ketone testing

"Management of Diabetes at Diabetes Camps"

  • Included information on the use of blood-ketone testing

"Prevention of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus"

  • Added results from the DPT-1 clinical trial

Terminology Change

The term HbA1c has been simplified to A1C throughout all position statements.
